Our Story

Carrie Dahlquist became aware of the need for supported employment services in her community when her son Taylor, who was diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), had difficulty securing employment as an adult.

Despite his intense desire to work and contribute to society like everyone else he knew, Taylor was having trouble obtaining and sustaining jobs. As any mother would, Carrie helped Taylor land a job at Walmart where he pushed carts and a job coach helped him through the tougher tasks in his job. Taylor excelled at his job and soon was known and loved throughout Walmart for his upbeat and hearty personality.

Realizing that many individuals face challenges while finding employment, Carrie, with the help of her husband Patrick and family, set out on a mission to create CHOICE Employment Services to help individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental health, or physical disabilities find jobs and help them maintain employment.

After 4 years of working at Walmart, Taylor achieved a major milestone by joining the family business which he inspired, to become a job coach. Walmart was sad to see such a valued employee leave, but thrilled to see Taylor blossom. Right away, fellow CHOICE colleagues noticed Taylor’s compassionate and understanding nature. His stern but encouraging leadership style quickly earned him the respect of his co-workers. Carrie and Patrick were so impressed by Taylor's accomplishments as a job coach that after only one year, Taylor earned the promotion to Field Trainer. Today, he trains new CHOICE job coaches and consumers in the workplace.

Since opening in 2012, CHOICE has served thousands of consumers in North East and Central Iowa on their journey to find and maintain community based employment.CHOICE continues to be recognized  for their outstanding performance assisting those with disabilities, and is recognized as a leading supported employment provider in Northeast Iowa and Central Iowa regions.

Our Evolution Since 2012

Built by Design. Refined by Experience.

CHOICE Employment Services was founded in 2012 with a clear vision:

Employment support should be professional, structured, consumer-directed, and stability-focused.

From the beginning, CHOICE was intentionally designed with leadership infrastructure that included Regional Directors providing localized oversight, professional accountability, and consistent employment monitoring. This structure was not common practice at the time — it was built to elevate standards.

As our organization grew, so did our model.

Over time, our field experience, consumer outcomes, employer partnerships, and leadership refinement led to the formal development of our Adaptive Stability Employment Model™ (ASEM™).

ASEM™ did not emerge from theory alone.
It evolved from over a decade of real-world Supported Employment practice.

The Evolution of Our Model

Since 2012, CHOICE has intentionally strengthened:

ASEM™ represents the formal articulation of the principles that have guided CHOICE from the beginning.

A Foundation That Continues to Evolve

We remain committed to innovation, professional standards, and consumer-driven outcomes.

Our leadership structure, Department of Outreach & Training, Regional Director model, and stability-focused approach all reflect our original commitment:

Employment support should empower consumers to excel not create dependence.

Founded in 2012.
Refined through experience.
Structured for stability.
